Social evolution

There was a time when all a person needed to survive was access to land and water; health, wife, sandals, spear, and one could look after one’s family needs for food, shelter and clothing. The bare necessities of life. But one could not do it alone so clustered with other families and there existed a collective communal consciousness. What was good for the community was what dominated. Individual consciousness would not evolve until nutrition allowed brain size and reasoning to manifest itself through differentiation and dominance. There evolved a leadership among those who were stronger, smarter, and more industrious. Those with less strength, smarts, or abilities were instructed and dominated by the leadership and in exchange  their needs for food, shelter, and clothing were looked after; but not without bitterness, resentment, envy and jealousy. Lifespans were short, life was difficult, and disease was the determinant of that length. This was an era of superstition, magic, dominated by fear and mistrust. Then as agriculture replaced hunting/gathering as means of food production there rose the need for ploughs and oxen and industry, and the ownership/control of land and waterways became crucial to the division of labour and power. Authority and hierarchy replaced the independence of small groups of nomads creating villages, towns, and then cities needing administration. The rise of intelligence and knowledge as determinants of elitist religious and secular leadership accompanied the ownership of land and tools of production. With better nutrition arose bigger brains, smarter citizens and development of innovations and inventions. The control of fire and the construction of stronger more durable wheels for carts increased industrial capacity. The manipulation of fire and metals created iron, copper, and bronze tools which increased likelihood of winning wars and controlling populations in slavery. The domestication of animals, particularly the horse accompanied this evolution of warfare and conquering territory and gaining slaves. The evolution of language and communication accompanied the rise in production of food, clothing, and all the accessories of industry which evolved alongside the increase in economic activity. The development of the printing press ushered in the age of enlightenment in the 1500’s by Guttenberg. Those with more land, water, and food were able to accumulate more wealth and the relation to capital created a working class and an owning class from early on. Those who were migrant and arrived into a settled area were given a choice to live in poverty and challenge the landowners to ownership by squatting and developing agriculture near the already occupied areas. There arose conflicts in ownership and wars ensued and the rise of slavery from battles won. The ability to defend one’s property, lands, and access to water became defining attributes of a successful landowner and farmer. The appropriation of a portion of the serf’s annual crop production as tax in exchange for living on the land and having access to water allowed the division of labour and classes to become established and within generations become tradition and appear to be absolute rule and law. The establishment of monetary system and collection of interest on monies borrowed increased the gap between rich and poor. The Romans are best known for developing social systems as these yet these also existed in China and in Persia and Assyria. The feudal system of lord and serf became the cornerstone of cities and states. The evolution of slavery accompanied the development of the feudal system of organization for those men and women who were unable to acquire the status of serf were reduced to selling their bodies as workers in exchange for protection, food and shelter. Their children were also concluded to belong to the Lord as did their parents. So evolved the slave class and the relationship to land, water, and ownership of property.
