to Caroline Myss on taking ownership of our suffering

to Caroline Myss: as children we can’t perceive that we are authors of our mis-behaviour- as ordained by our parents- we just float along on the waves of curiosity and pleasure-seeking. As adolescents we don’t take responsibility for our part in our pain and suffering because we are unable to reflect on our authorship or causal nature of our lives. As young adults we go into denial about being responsible for our mess and blame our baggage on our parents and perhaps on past generations and genetics. Then we fall in love, if we’re lucky, and are seen through the mirror of a loved one who should love us unconditionally, and they don’t or they won’t. They see our flaws and character shortcomings and force us to look into the mirror and see ourselves for who we are. If enough people who love us see us in this same way we may begin to believe them and see our part in the creation of our misery and suffering.
Then we have a choice to continue denying our authorship of our own pain, misery, and suffering, or choose to face the demons, so to speak, within, and find the source of our samsara and of our role in its evolution and perpetuation.
The choice is ours, to refuse it or receive it as ours, to deal with it, and to heal.
