In Torkom Saraydarian’s book: “The science of Becoming Oneself” he makes the distinction between happiness and joy; as follows:
Joy is the fragrance of the Chalice the Lotus…The Lotus is the permanent source of Joy.As it unfolds, joy increases. Joy is not conditioned by outer circumstances; it is like a beacon, the foundation of which rests on ageless rocks.
Happiness is an effect of outer conditions. When favorable conditions change, happiness disappears, leaving the gloom of depression.
Joy never changes. It increases as the problems and conflicts increase in one’s life. It grows in spite of conditions.
How profound is this truth which reveals the different layers of reality or perception and experience.
What a difference between happiness which is a feeling which is swept about like fallen leaves in the wind, subject to the whims of Nature and lower desires.
Hence the notion of “Happy Hour”, intending that it’s not meant to last.
When contrasted with Joy, that creative essence which flows eternally from the Divine Chalice which is the Heart/Crown chakra connection.
Just as it is necessary to remove the old oil from our engines before adding new, our physical body needs to be purified before the spiritual essence of Love and Joy can replace the fleeting and emotionally-based feeling of Happiness.
How do we make this transformation from the lower desires into a higher level of Loving?
Love which is pure and which flows from the Soul is expansive, un-Selfish, concerned with the well-being of All; where there is no ‘Other’, where there is only expressions of sacrifice and service to expand the eternally flowing expression of Love from the Golden Heart\Crown Chalice.
The Catholic Ritual contains the symbolism of the Chalice and the drinking of the Blood, or Essence of the Christ figure, who is personified Love; the Word become Flesh, the Ultimate Lover, radiating Love from his eternal Chalice of Life.
The significant meaning which is lost in the ritual of the Holy Communion is that each one of us contains within us this Holy Grail, this Holy Chalice, which is the very essence of our incarnated Souls; individual yet united in the Essence of all Souls.
This is where we are united as One with the Christ being, as Souls, individualized like atoms and molecules and beings on the material plane, yet share the same Higher Essence with all other sentient beings, animate and inanimate.
The great and deep respect which we have for our Soul is the same great and deep respect which we have for all living beings: organic, and inorganic.
We share the same life, the same love, the same Essence.
We are One.
